Car Cost of Ownership Calculator

Add up fuel, registration, insurance, servicing, tyres and depreciation to see your car's true annual, monthly and per-km cost.

How it works

Annual running cost adds up fuel (from your annual km, fuel usage and fuel price), registration, insurance, servicing, tyres and any other recurring costs. Multiplied by your ownership period and added to total depreciation, that gives the total cost of ownership — which is then divided by years, months and total kilometres driven to give annual, monthly and per-km figures.

Total Cost = (Annual Running Cost × Years) + (Purchase Price − Resale Value)

Worked example

A $35,000 car, owned for 5 years, driving 15,000km/year, reselling for $15,000:

Annual fuel (7L/100km @ $1.80)
≈ $1,890/year
Annual running cost
≈ $5,190/year (incl. rego, insurance, servicing, tyres)
Total depreciation
$35,000 − $15,000 = $20,000
Total cost of ownership
≈ $45,950 over 5 years
