Work out how much a trip will cost in fuel, and split it between passengers.
How it works
The calculator converts your trip distance into litres used by applying your car’s fuel consumption, then multiplies by the fuel price. If you split the cost, it simply divides the total by the number of people sharing the trip.
fuel cost = distance (km) × consumption (L/100km) ÷ 100 × fuel price ($/L)
Worked example
A 250 km trip in a car using 8 L/100km, with fuel at $1.85/L, split between two people:
- Fuel used
- 250 × (8 ÷ 100) = 20 litres
- Trip cost
- 20 × $1.85 = $37.00
- Cost per person
- $37.00 ÷ 2 = $18.50
Frequently asked questions
Multiply your trip distance by your car's fuel consumption (litres per 100km) to get litres used, then multiply by the fuel price. A 500km trip at 7.5L/100km and $1.90/L costs about $71.25 in fuel — split four ways, that's about $17.81 each.
